In China, the domes of the last major mosque retaining Islamic architectural features have been destroyed. The mosque’s minarets have also been fundamentally altered. This action is part of China's effort to curb the spread of Islam in the country.

The Shadian Grand Mosque is one of the largest and most magnificent mosques in China, located in the southwestern Yunnan province. Until last year, the 21,000 square meter complex featured a large building with a green tiled dome topped with a crescent moon, flanked by four smaller domes and tall minarets. Satellite photos from 2022 showed the mosque's entrance gate was covered with black tiles.

Recent images, including satellite photos and eyewitness accounts, reveal that China has removed the mosque's domes and replaced them with pagoda-style roofs in the Han Chinese architectural style. The minarets have been shortened and converted into pagoda towers, and a trace of crescent and star tiles can still be seen on the roof. Another historic mosque in Yunnan, the Najiaying Mosque, located less than 100 miles from Shadian, has also undergone changes.

In 2018, the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party published a document detailing the control and integration of mosques. It urged the government to demolish more mosques, reduce new constructions, and limit the overall number of these structures. Additionally, the document called for close monitoring of mosque construction, layout, and financing.
